“Dresses?” The doctor looked confused.

Connie spoke up. “Don’t worry, Ellen, we’ll figure it out.” She looked at the doc. “Ellen’s getting married in a month.”

“Best of luck. At least the father will be around to support you.”

Ellen nodded, looking a bit stunned.

“Don’t forget to set up your next appointment. I’ll call when I have a shifter doctor for you.” He smiled and left, leaving the door open.

“Connie, what am I going to do?”

“You’re going to get married and have babies, Ellen. What you’ve always wanted to do.” Connie bounced from foot to foot. Babies. In. The. House. Connie couldn’t wait to go shopping.

Ellen turned and hugged her. “You’re right, Connie. I just have to believe everything will be okay.” Shoving the vitamins and papers in her purse, she stood, grabbed the photos, smiled and tucked them away also.

They headed out of the office and stopped at the appointment desk on the way back to Kai.

Kai lifted his head. Close to an hour passed. Finally Connie and Ellen headed down the hall, closer to the waiting room. He could smell their scents coming toward him. He frowned, watching them come into view. They appeared to be bursting with excitement and a bit of trepidation. He watched them stop at the receptionist. Ellen appeared to be making another appointment.

He’d have to tell Breccan, unless Ellen did it first. He’d give her the chance. The girls both seemed excited, so it couldn’t be bad news. They seemed giddy, smiles wreathing their faces. Kai stood, silently escorting them to the truck. It was obvious they shared a secret. It remained to be seen what the secret was.

“Do you still want to head to the wedding boutique?” Kai asked while Ellen and Connie looked at each other, smiling.

“No. I think we’ll do that another day.” Ellen seemed to glow. “I think I want to go home and see my man.” Connie gave a soft laugh and grabbed Ellen’s hand.

“I think that’s a good idea.” Her voice dropped into a whisper. “He’ll be so excited.”

He helped them in, then got behind the wheel. Kai draped an arm around Connie, pulling her tight into his side. He enjoyed the warmth she generated as she snuggled up to him. They drove in silence, Kai more content than in a long time. Ellen played with the radio until she found a station she liked and began singing along to a song she recognized. Kai winced, the sound of her voice, just slightly off key.

“Knock it off! You’re hurting Kai’s ears.” Connie glanced at Ellen, jabbing her with her elbow. “I don’t think country is your type of music.”

“But I like it.” Ellen grinned. “Are you saying I can’t carry a tune?” Ellen started warbling and the noise got worse.

“I thought you could sing.” Kai swore he’d heard better from her. Maybe it was just the country music. If everyone could sing it, there would be more stations.

Ellen laughed and began again, this time in perfect tune.

Kai swung a look at her, a bit disgusted.
